LASTING RELIEF FROM BACK PAIN AND SCIATICA

At Stretch Life, every session is built on the power of PNF Assisted Stretching.

Imagine moving with ease, bending without a grimace, and feeling truly comfortable in your own body again. Our PNF stretch sessions work on gently releasing any areas of tension and tightness across your whole body that contribute to your pain.

PNF was designed by physiotherapists back in the 1950’s to connect the brain and the body to ensure freedom of movement. It’s clinically proven to deliver results and with regular weekly or bi-weekly sessions, the effects compound to support your long term resilience to stop the back pain returning.

PNF is the bridge between physiotherapy and long term recovery you’ve been looking for.

common questions

  • Back pain as well as other common areas of pain such as hip and shoulder often originate from other areas of your body. Back pain can be caused or worsened by tight hamstrings, hip flexors or tight calves for example, even if you don’t realise it.

Whilst our therapists will work on your back area specifically, we always take a whole body approach to your pain. Ensuring your whole body is relieved of tension and tightness which in turn will support easing your back pain for the long term.

  • We’ve had great success with fixing sciatica pain.

Sciatica pain can be incredibly painful and flare up regularly. We stretch the piriformis muscle which is often hard to reach yourself and releasing this can improve sciatica for you and keep it at bay. Sciatica is complex and can be triggered from various areas of tension and tightness which is why our focus on the whole body and nervous system will be the most effective for keeping this pain at bay.

In fact our founder suffered herself from sciatica and can empathise with your pain. She has not had a flare up for over a year now because of regular PNF stretching.

  • If you have a bulging disc or slipped disc, we would recommend you see a GP before coming in for PNF assisted stretching.

If the disc injury was over 6 months ago and you do not have regular flare-up’s, you can come in for sessions without seeing a GP first but please do ensure you put the details onto your medical questionnaire before your session so your therapist can prepare.

  • Yes absolutely. We can adapt the PNF assisted stretching to be suitable for your body and spine as we work with you on a one-on-one basis to ensure you get the most out of the stretch session.

Many people with scoliosis can feel restricted in their movements and PNF assisted stretching can help you go beyond your body’s natural limitations right from your first stretch. You’ll be amazed at how much more freedom of movement you can achieve with regular sessions.

  • Absolutely. PNF assisted stretching works with the nervous system and muscular system. This powerful combination reduces your cortisol levels and in turn inflammation which often contributes to arthritis flare-up’s.

If you have arthritis, you will find great relief with regular PNF assisted stretch sessions and we recommend coming in every week or every 2 weeks for optimum pain relief.

  • Yes you can. If the surgery was more than 12 months ago, we are able to safely support your recovery. PNF assisted stretching will help your mobility and strengthen the surrounding muscles to support your long term spinal health.

If your surgery was within 12 months, we would ask you to check with your GP first before coming in.

  • Most of our clients have some sort of back, shoulder and neck pain that is undiagnosed. Typically it comes from putting your body in the same positions each day. Sitting at a desk for hours, doing repetitive motion at work for example. If you have persistent back, hip, neck or shoulder pain, PNF assisted stretching is for you. You do not need any kind of GP referral or to have had a diagnosed injury to benefit.

  • Short answer is no. You will feel ease after one 50 minute session and your whole body will feel freer but for lasting results, a few more regular sessions will be needed. Especially if you put your body back in the same positions again straight away such as sitting for long periods at a desk.

If your body hasn’t been stretched much recently, we will take it very gently on the first session to get your nervous system engaged which in turn will support your muscles letting go to elongate and strengthen your body against pain.

We recommend coming in weekly if you have persistent back pain for 3-6 sessions (we can’t be more specific than that as everyone responds differently as bodies are unique) although after that, typically people will find that their nervous system engages and relaxes to hold the pain at bay for longer. Once that has been achieved you can drop your frequency down to every 2 weeks to maintain your freedom of movement.

With PNF assisted stretching, we’re creating a ‘muscle memory’ that retains the flexibility and freedom of movement for the long term. Everyone’s body is unique so some people respond very quickly to creating the ‘memory’ and find ease fast, others take more time to hold the pain at bay in between sessions and need more time to ease out pain that may have been present for a long time. Consistency is important as with all recovery and the best bit about PNF assisted stretching is that it’s effortless for you and relaxing.

Whatever your body reaction, we guarantee you’ll reach greater ranges of motion every stretch, giving you more freedom of movement every time.

  • Each person responds differently to the stretch which is why we work with you on a one-on-one basis to ensure the stretch is optimised for you.

We recommend you start with our 50 min first timer stretch which is offered at a special price of £49.

Your therapist will assess your body, how it moves and how your nervous system responds to then recommend how often to come in for regular sessions.

Usually if you have long term pain, we start with weekly sessions for 3-6 weeks and then drop to every other week sessions to continue your long term recovery. After that, you can go into more of a maintenance schedule to keep your pain at bay and to support you to move well now and in 5, 10, 20 or even 30 years time through working on your mobility.

We have both membership and stretch credit packs that make it cheaper every time you stretch.

  • Your first 50 min session is £49. Book the first timer introductory session to secure this price.

After that, we offer a variety of stretch credit packs and memberships.

These packs and memberships make stretching cheaper each visit and represent very good value compared to chiropractor, physio or massage sessions.

For example, a chiropractor can charge up to £85 for a short session, with a pack, our prices are less than £50 for 50 minutes. Same with massage, you might pay £60 upwards for a massage when a PNF stretch gives you all the relaxation of a massage but with a recovery that lasts longer and has more benefits for your body.

We do offer 25 min stretch sessions but for someone with back pain, we would advise you try to come for 50 min sessions where possible as this gives your body more time to fully release the pain and ease tension for longer.

  • Some health insurance policies will cover alternative therapies so do check with them if you can claim for PNF assisted stretching.

It’s worth noting that BUPA typically does not cover this as they are typically quite restricted but you may find other policies will.

Please note that all bookings must be paid for in advance of the session by credit or debit card. We do not administer claim backs through insurance policies so you would have to organise a claim yourself using our invoice.
